Solar (PV) Power Systems
Prime & Backup Power
System Range: 50W-5kW
Solar (PV) is a proven source of DC power that converts sunlight directly into electricity. Solar (PV) can be effective in any environment that receives solar radiation, even in locations like Alaska and Northern Canada when properly sized. Since 1982, we’ve provided over a thousand reliable Solar (PV) Power Systems for a variety of wayside rail power requirements and offer the industry’s most comprehensive mounting options including our RP Series Retractable Mast ensuring that we can meet virtually any site requirement and/or budget.
Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
Extended-Run Backup Power
System Range: 250W-1.25kW
An extended power outage from an ice storm, wind storm, hurricane or other extreme event doesn’t have to jeopardize your rail signaling and communications operations. While battery back-up can provide hours of protection, extended up-time isn’t ensured unless rail signaling and communication systems are proactively backed up with our propane or natural gas powered Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) 250W-1.25kW. Since 2013, we’ve commissioned hundreds of railroad fuel cells for rail customers in the US & Canada!
Stirling Engine Generators
Prime & Backup Power
System Range: 1.8kW-5.6kW
PowerGen Stirling Engine Generators are a maintenance-free alternative to diesel/gas generators for mid-to-high power wayside requirements. Powered by propane or natural gas, the PowerGen is capable of providing prime and backup power to critical applications. Experience hassle-free power generation with PowerGen railroad fuel cells. No routine maintenance, oil changes, or start/stop cycle limitations. Expect over 60,000 hours of reliable service, unmatched by other technologies.
Battery Boxes
Outdoor Battery Protection
Standard & Custom Sizes*
Our robust Battery Boxes are designed to shield and protect battery systems located in harsh outdoor environments. Constructed of all-welded aluminum (steel constructon also available) and featuring fully insulated panels, these battery boxes provide excellent protection for your batteries. We offer several standard sizes and can provide custom sizes and a high level of customization per customer requirements.
Wind Turbines
Supplemental Power
System Range: 350W-1.2kW
SuperWind Micro-Wind Turbines (350W & 1250W) provide a source of DC power by capturing the energy of moving air and converting it into electricity. SuperWind Micro-Wind Turbines are made of the highest quality components – salt water resistant aluminum alloy and stainless steel for autonomous operation in any harsh environment. When the application is critical, the professional soluton is SuperWind!
Alkaline Fuel Cells
Extended-Run Backup Power
System Range: 5kW+
Alkaline Fuel Cells (AFC) were one of the first fuel cell technologies developed, and they were the first type widely used in the U.S. space program to produce electrical energy and water on-board spacecraft. Powered by hydrogen or ammonia our AFCs are capable of providing long-duration backup power in a compact, resilient and zero-emissions package. AFCs are ideally suited for for critical telecommunications and other mission-critical applications.
FAQs
What types of railroad applications can RedHawk Energy power?
RedHawk Energy provides reliable power solutions for a wide range of railroad and rail transit applications. Our systems are commonly used to support railroad signaling equipment, switch machines, grade crossings, communication systems, Positive Train Control (PTC) infrastructure, remote monitoring stations, and other mission-critical rail operations.
We offer customized solutions using solar power, fuel cells, battery backup systems, Switch Boost™ ultracapacitor modules, and hybrid technologies to help railroads maintain safe and reliable operations in both grid-connected and remote environments.
What backup power solutions are best for railroad signaling systems?
The best backup power solution for a railroad signaling system depends on the application, runtime requirements, site location, and environmental conditions. RedHawk Energy offers several proven technologies, including battery backup systems, solar-powered systems, fuel cells, and hybrid configurations designed specifically for railroad infrastructure.
For remote or off-grid locations, solar and fuel cell systems can provide long-duration, low-maintenance backup power. For high-demand switch applications, our Switch Boost™ Systems use ultracapacitor technology to deliver reliable bursts of power while reducing battery strain.
Our team works closely with railroad operators to engineer a solution that delivers the reliability, runtime, and performance required for safe rail operations.
How do railroad backup power systems work during utility outages?
Railroad backup power systems are designed to automatically provide power when utility service is interrupted. When an outage occurs, the system immediately switches to its backup power source, such as batteries, fuel cells, solar energy storage, or ultracapacitors, to keep critical railroad equipment operational.
These systems help maintain uninterrupted operation of signaling equipment, crossing gates, communication systems, and switch machines during storms, grid failures, or other emergency situations. Depending on the system design, backup power can support operations for hours, days, or even extended periods in remote locations.
RedHawk Energy designs railroad backup power solutions with reliability and resiliency in mind, helping rail operators reduce downtime and maintain safe operations in demanding environments.
